Hernando Concrete Around the Square and Beyond
Hernando homeowners looking for concrete contractors live in a city with two distinct sides. Around the DeSoto County Courthouse on Court Square sit older homes inside the city's historic districts. Beyond them are the subdivisions of the past twenty-five years. Hernando had 3,125 residents in 1990, 6,812 in 2000, 14,090 in 2010 and 17,138 at the 2020 census, so most of its 6,562 housing units are fairly new.
Historic districts and approvals
The City of Hernando's Historic Preservation Commission oversees five historic districts: Commerce Street, Courthouse Square, Elm Street, Northside and Southside-Magnolia. The commission grants Certificates of Appropriateness for projects within the historic preservation district, and the Mississippi Department of Archives and History authorizes the districts. If your home is in one of them, check with the city's Office of Planning about whether new walks, steps or driveways need a certificate. We plan the design, finish and timing to fit the commission's process.
A long history
Hernando was named in 1832 for Hernando de Soto, the first European to explore the Mississippi River, and the city dates its founding to 1839. Early twentieth-century blues musicians including Robert Wilkins and Frank Stokes came from here. The Felix LaBauve House is on the National Register of Historic Places. Hernando is a designated Preserve America and Main Street Community, and downtown concrete work should look like it belongs there.
Newer neighborhoods
Most of our Hernando work is outside the districts, replacing driveways and adding patios for homes built since 2000. The completion of Interstate 269 brought more investment, and the city continues to see new residential and commercial projects. Newer slabs often need a settled panel replaced, a patio extended or a parking pad added.
Drainage on open ground
Hernando sits at about 305 feet of elevation and covers roughly 25 square miles. Heavy Mid-South rain and flat building pads mean water has to be planned for. We slope every slab, keep downspouts off new concrete and suggest a drain where needed.
Driveways for new Hernando homes
Many newer Hernando houses came with a driveway that fits two cars and little else. Common upgrades include widening the driveway, adding a parking pad for a third car, boat or trailer, and pouring a walk that connects the driveway to the front door or backyard. When we add onto existing concrete, we tie the new section in with a clean joint and dowels where needed so the two pieces stay level with each other.

Hernando Questions
Does my Hernando walk or driveway need historic approval?
If your property is in one of the five historic districts, the Historic Preservation Commission may need to grant a Certificate of Appropriateness. Ask the Office of Planning, and we will work within their conditions.
Can new concrete match an older home near Court Square?
Yes. We keep walks and steps in scale, choose a finish that suits the house, and match existing concrete color and texture as closely as we can.
Do you work in newer Hernando subdivisions?
Yes. Most of our Hernando work is driveway replacement, patio additions and parking pads for newer homes.
Will a driveway extension look patched?
New concrete is lighter at first and blends over a few months. A clean saw-cut joint and matching broom direction help the extension look intentional.
How do you keep an extension level with the old driveway?
We drill and set dowels into the existing slab where needed and compact the base under the new section so both pieces move together.
What concrete jobs are most common in Hernando?
Driveway replacement and widening, back patio additions, stamped patios, side walks to the backyard and parking pads for boats or trailers make up most of our Hernando work.
How long will a Certificate of Appropriateness add to my project?
That depends on the commission's schedule. We suggest applying as early as possible and will plan the pour date around the approval.
