Moscow Concrete Where Two Rivers Meet

Moscow is one of the smallest towns we serve, and the concrete contractors who work here have to respect the water. The town lies at the confluence of the Wolf River and its North Fork in southern Fayette County. The Army Corps of Engineers later rerouted the waterways and moved the main channel west, which is how Moscow earned the nickname Land Between Two Rivers. At the 2020 census it had 572 residents and 246 housing units on about 1.3 square miles.

Building near river ground

Soil near rivers tends to be softer and wetter than upland ground. When a driveway or patio is poured on that kind of base without enough preparation, it can settle within a few years. In Moscow we dig below the soft surface layer, bring in crushed stone and compact it in lifts, and set the finished concrete so water runs away from the house and off the slab quickly. For steps and stoops, we often recommend footings so they do not drop away from the house.

A town with Civil War history

Moscow was founded by J. A. Dilliard, who named it for Moscow, Russia, the hometown of his wife Alexandra. On December 4, 1863, Confederate cavalry tried to burn the railroad bridge over the Wolf River here, and African American Union troops stationed nearby stopped them. Older homes in town reflect that long history, and repairs to their walks and steps should look like they belong.

Weather on record

Moscow's climate records include a high of 110 degrees on July 28, 1952 and a low of minus 14 degrees on February 2, 1951, with about 55 inches of precipitation a year. Big temperature swings and heavy rain are hard on poorly built concrete. We use air-entrained concrete for outdoor slabs, cure it properly in hot weather, and cut joints at the right spacing and time.

Getting here

State Route 57 runs 15 miles west to Collierville and 13 miles east to Grand Junction, and State Route 76 runs 13 miles north to Somerville. Being a few miles further out is no problem for us. We schedule Moscow jobs so the crew and the concrete truck arrive together and the pour goes in without delay.

A plan for each pour

We start a Moscow job by walking the property with you and looking for the high and low spots. From there we decide how deep to dig, how much stone base the slab needs, and which direction the finished concrete should drain. You get a written estimate listing each step, and the written estimate is the price. On pour day we place, finish and joint the concrete, then leave it curing under cover or moist so it gains full strength.

What we pour in Moscow

Driveways and aprons, porch steps and stoops, sidewalks, back patios, and slabs for carports, sheds and shops. Tennessee law requires three full business days of notice to Tennessee 811 before excavation, and we file that for you. Call (901) 910-1055 for a free estimate.

Moscow Questions

Do you travel out to Moscow for smaller jobs?

Yes. We serve Moscow and the surrounding part of Fayette County, and we can often pair a small job like steps with a walk or pad to make the trip efficient for you.

Why do slabs near the river settle?

River-area soil is often soft and holds water. Without deeper excavation and a compacted stone base, the slab can sink. We prepare the base for those conditions.

Can you replace steps that pulled away from my porch?

Yes. We remove the old steps and pour new ones, often with footings, so they stay tight to the porch.

Do I need footings under my steps?

For steps attached to a porch or house, footings help keep them from settling away. We recommend them on soft or wet ground like that near the river.

Can you pour a carport slab?

Yes. We pour carport slabs with thickened edges or footings where posts sit, and slope the slab so water runs out from under the roof.
